Hosmer Grove FOREST
Hosmer Grove, off a side road just after the park's entrance booth, is worth a stop for a
pleasant half-mile loop trail that winds through a small pine- and cedar-filled forest, as
well as native scrubland. The whole area is sweetened with the scent of eucalyptus and
alive with the red flashes and calls of native birds.
There's a campground here as well as picnic tables and restrooms; the trail begins at
the edge of the campground. Drive slowly on the road in, as this is one of the top places
to spot nene.
Waikamoi Preserve PRESERVE
( 572-4459; www.nature.org ) This windswept native cloud forest supports one of the
rarest ecosystems on earth. Managed by the Nature Conservancy, the 5230-acre
Waikamoi Preserve provides the last stronghold for 76 species of native plants and forest
birds. The only way to see the preserve is to join a guided hike.
