only condo complex is just a stone's throw from Hana's hottest surfing beach. The units
are nicely fitted and although the walls are thin, the sound of the surf drowns out neigh-
boring chatter. For primo ocean views request a top-floor corner unit. With the exception
of the oceanfront condos, Hana Kai-Maui has no minimum stay. The two-bedroom unit
rents for $450 per night.
Hale Waikoloa
COTTAGE $$$
cottage is just a few steps from Waikoloa Beach at Hana Bay. Although it contains three
units, only the two-bedroom ground floor unit, with kitchen and living area, was avail-
able for rent at press time. The property is fronted by a rock outcropping which served as
a fishing
heiau
, or holy place. It may date from the 1500s.

) This landmark resort is under new ownership, but it's just as appealing as ever. Known
for decades as Hotel Hana-Maui, this new incarnation retains the property's tranquil, get-
away-from-it-all charm. The decor is rich with Hawaiian accents, from island art in the
lobby to made in Maui bath products. Rooms have a subdued elegance with bleached
hardwood floors, ceiling fans and French doors opening to trellised patios - but no TVs.
Travaasa properties tout their 'experiental' getaways; in Hana, guests can enjoy an an
assortment of adventures, from coconut husking and lei making to yoga and snorkeling.
One quibble? The $72 daily resort fee! Wi-fi is available in the lobby only.
Eating
Hana has just a couple of stores with limited grocery selections, so if you're staying
awhile stock up in Kahului beforehand. Many 'restaurants' are simple open-air eateries
that are only open during the day. Bring cash for these. Dinner is served at Travaasa
Hana and the Hana Ranch restaurant.
