Kula Sandalwoods Cottages COTTAGE $$$
MAP
( 878-3523; www.kulasandalwoods.com ; 15427 Haleakalā Hwy; r $139; ) A half-dozen
freestanding cottages dot the hillside above Kula Sandalwoods Restaurant. Think rustic,
but rooms do have flat screen TVs and wi-fi. The sweeping view from the lanai is top
rate and the price is a bargain for being on the doorstep of the national park. It's about 45
minutes to Haleakalā's summit. On-site restaurant serves breakfast and lunch Monday to
Saturday and breakfast only on Sunday.
Kula Lodge CABINS $$$
MAP
( 878-1535; www.kulalodge.com ; 15200 Haleakala Hwy; cabins $150-220; ) The word
'chalet' might be a stretch for the five rustic cabins that comprise Kula Lodge, but hey,
who are we to knock a little can-do optimism? The cabins sit on the slopes of Haleakalā
about 45 minutes from the volcano's summit. All units come with lanai, coffeemakers
and extra blankets. Four have lofts, which are great for kids. There are no TVs, tele-
phones or kitchenettes. Wi-fi available at the on-site restaurant.
