(4300 Lower Kula Rd; 8am-6pm) On the National Register of Historic Places, the
octagonal Holy Ghost Church was built in 1895 by Portuguese immigrants. The church
features a beautifully ornate interior that looks like it came right out of the Old World,
and indeed much of it did. The gilded altar was carved by renowned Austrian woodcarv-
er Ferdinand Stuflesser and shipped in pieces around the Cape of Good Hope.
Activities
Pony Express HORSEBACK RIDING
MAP
( 667-2200; www.ponyexpresstours.com ; Haleakalā Crater Rd; trail rides $95-182; 7am-9pm)
Several horseback rides are offered, beginning with easy nose-to-tail walks across pas-
tures and woods on Haleakalā Ranch. But the real prize is the ride into the national
park's Haleakalā crater that starts at the crater summit and leads down Sliding Sands
Trail to the floor of this lunarlike wonder.
Skyline Eco-Adventures ZIPLINING
( 878-8400; www.zipline.com ; Haleakalā Crater Rd; zipline tour $95; 8:30am-3:30pm)
Maui's first zipline scored a prime location on the slopes of Haleakalā. Even though the
zips are relatively short compared with the new competition, there's plenty of adrenaline
rush as you soar above the treetops over a series of five gulches. A half-mile hike and a
suspension bridge are tossed in for good measure.
Proflyght Paragliding PARAGLIDING
MAP
( 874-5433; www.paraglidemaui.com ; Waipoli Rd; paraglide $95-185; office 7am-7pm, flights
2hrs after sunrise) Strap into a tandem paraglider with a certified instructor and take a run-
ning leap from a Haleakalā incline near the Aliʻi Kula Lavender Farm. After a lesson,
soar on a 1000ft descent or a 3000ft descent. Reserve your spot a few days to a week in
advance. The term ʻbird's-eye view' will never be the same.
