Haʻiku
HAIKU-PAUWELA POP 8118
Haʻiku, like Paʻia, has its roots in sugarcane. Maui's first 12 acres of the sweet stuff were
planted here in 1869, and the village once had both a sugar mill and pineapple canneries.
Thanks to its affordability and proximity to Hoʻokipa Beach, it's a haunt of pro surfers
who have rejuvenated the town. Today the old cannery buildings are once again the heart
of the community, housing a market, a Haleakalā bike tour company and detour-worthy
eateries.

Fourth Marine Division Memorial Park PARK
MAP
( www.mauicounty.gov ; MM 2, Kokomo Rd; ) The jungle gym at this county park - complete
with turrets, boardwalks and slides - is awesome. On the grounds of a WWII marine
camp, the park is a great place to come if the kids are wound-up after a morning of shop-
ping in Makawao.
