In-Depth Information
showcases local art and encourages artistic expression through its workshops and studio
spaces. The plantation house, where the main galleries and gift shop are found, was de-
signed by famed architect CW Dickey in 1917 and displays the Hawaiian Regional style
architectural features he pioneered.
The prestigious arts club founded here in the 1930s still offers classes in printmaking,
pottery, woodcarving and other visual arts. Galleries exhibit the diverse works of island
artists, and you can walk around the grounds to check out artists at work in one-time
stables converted into art studios. The gift shop sells quality ceramics, glassware and
prints created on-site. Pick up a walking-tour map at the front desk; there's a small his-
torical exhibition room beside the entrance. The center is just north of mile marker 5.

Piiholo Ranch Zipline ZIPLINING
MAP
( 572-1717; www.piiholozipline.com ; zip-line course Piiholoi Rd, canopy tour Makawao Rd; zip tours
$146-198, canopy tours $94-172; reservations 7am-8pm, tour times vary) This top-rate opera-
tion takes care to orient zipriders before they jump. The first zip is a warm-up, with a
glide over a gentle sloping meadow. It gets progressively more interesting, with the last
zip ripping more than half a mile at an eagle's height of 600ft above the tree canopy. Du-
al lines let you zip side by side with a buddy. The company's canopy tour spends more
time in the trees, with guests hiking on lofty bridges between towering platforms then
zipping through the forest.
Olinda Road SCENIC DRIVE
For the ultimate country drive, head high into the hills above Makawao along Olinda Rd
then loop back to town on Piʻiholo Rd. The route, which picks up where Baldwin Ave
ends, twists and turns through a lush residential area on the slopes of Haleakala, offering
tantalizing glimpses of coastal landscapes far below.
The scenic drive drifts up past the Oskie Rice Arena , where rodeos are held, and the
Maui Polo Club, which hosts matches on Sunday afternoons in the fall. From here the
winding road is little more than a path through the forest, with knotty tree roots as high
as your car caressing the roadsides. The air is rich with the spicy fragrance of eucalyptus
trees and occasionally there's a clearing with an ocean vista.
Four miles up from town, past mile marker 11, is the Maui Bird Conservation Center
MAP , which breeds nene (native Hawaiian geese) and other endangered birds. To make
