Makawao
POP 7184
Aloha Cowboy! That's the name of Makawao's most eclectic store, and it perfectly cap-
tures the essence of this quirky art town that refuses to remove its boots and spurs.
Started as a ranching town in the 1800s, Makawao wears its paniolo history in the Old
West-style wooden buildings lining Baldwin Ave. And the cattle pastures surrounding
town remind you it's more than just history.
But that's only one side of Makawao. Many of the old shops that once sold saddles
and stirrups now have artsy new tenants who have turned Makawao into the most hap-
pening art center on Maui. Its galleries display the works of painters and sculptors who
have escaped frenzied scenes elsewhere to set up shop in these inspirational hills.
All of the shops and restaurants that follow are within a few minutes' walk of
Makawao's main intersection, where Baldwin Ave (Hwy 390) meets Makawao Ave
(Hwy 365).

LABYRINTH WALKS
Up for a meditative moment? The Sacred Garden of Maliko MAP ( 573-7700;
www.sacredgardenmaui.com ; 460 Kaluanui Rd, Makawao; 10am-5pm) , a self-described
healing sanctuary, has a pair of rock-garden labyrinth walks guaranteed to reset
the harmony gauge. One's in an orchid greenhouse facing a contemplative Buddha
statue; the other's in akukui(candlenut tree) grove beside Maliko Stream. Check
the website for details about the monthly full-moon labyrinth walks (7:30pm to
9pm)To get there, turn east off Baldwin Ave onto Kaluanui Rd. After 0.8 miles cross
a one-lane bridge; 0.2 miles further on, look for a low stone wall - the garden is on
the right just before a sharp S-curve in the road.
