NORTH SHORE & UPCOUNTRY
The surf-sculpted North Shore stands in sharp contrast to the gently rolling pastures car-
peting the Upcountry slopes nearby. The towns - beachy Paʻia, artsy Makawao and mud-
on-your-boots Keokea - boast as much weathered personality as their proud residents.
Green and fragrant, the Upcountry simply begs a country drive. The possibilities for
exploring are nothing short of breathtaking. Zipline over deep gorges, paraglide down the
hillsides or ride a horse through a lofty cloud forest.
Everyone passes through a slice of the Upcountry on the way to Haleakalā National
Park, but don't settle for a fly-by. Look around the showy gardens, lightly trodden trails
and rambling back roads. They alone are worth the trip.
