In-Depth Information
The turnoff to the main parking area is a mile beyond the Makena Beach & Golf Re-
sort. A second parking area lies a quarter of a mile to the south. Thefts and broken wind-
shields are a possibility, so don't leave valuables in your car in either lot.
Secret Cove BEACH

This lovely, postcard-size swath of golden sand, with a straight-on view of Kahoʻolawe,
is worth a peek - although it's no longer much of a secret. The cove is a quarter-mile
after the southernmost Makena State Park parking lot. The entrance is through an open-
ing in a lava-rock wall just south of house No 6900.

) Under new management following a foreclosure auction in 2010, this
striking, fortresslike resort has revamped all of its rooms, which shine with simple but
sophisticated island style: white bedspreads, tropical green throws, granite countertops
and cherrywood furniture. The resort's 1800-acre perch beside Makena Beach is beauti-
ful, not to mention a top launch pad for snorkelers and kayakers hoping to spy a sea
turtle.
Management has also gone on a hiring spree, picking up chefs as well as golf and ten-
nis pros from top Maui resorts. Best of all? No resort fee or parking fee.
