Monkeypod Kitchen PUB $$$

( 891-2322; www.monkeypodkitchen.com ; Wailea Gateway, 10 Wailea Gateway Pl; lunch $11-21,
dinner $14-33; 11:30am-11pm, happy hour 3-5:30pm & 9-11pm) At first glance this new
eatery seems a little too hip and a little too glossy for laid back Maui. But then you take a
seat at the chattering bar. There, the staff and your fellow drinkers keep the alohas real.
The restaurant strives to maintain an organic and sustainable menu, evidenced by the
Maui Cattle burgers and Upcountry veggies.
Woodfired pizzas are $9 during happy hour - mmm, Hamakua wild mushroom - and
there are 36 beers on tap.
Pita Paradise MEDITERRANEAN $$$
( 879-7177; www.pitaparadisehawaii.com ; Wailea Gateway Center, 34 Wailea Gateway Pl; lunch
$9-18, dinner $16-30; 11am-9:30pm) Although this Greek taverna sits in a cookie-cutter
strip mall lacking ocean views, the inviting patio, townscape mural and tiny white lights
- not to mention the succulent Mediterranean chicken pita - banish any locational re-
grets. Owner John Arabatzis Jr catches his own fish, which is served in everything from
pita sandwiches at lunch to grilled kabobs at dinner.

( 891-3954; www.wailearesortdining.com ; Grand Wailea, 3850 Wailea Alanui Dr; small plates
$11-40, sushi $8-50; 5-10pm) The Whole Tomato Salad looks like art - a bright red orb
balanced on a delicate layer of cucumber, all framed by a circle of plummy-orange dress-
ing. One bite and the distinct but complementary flavors lift the meal to masterpiece. It's
a skill that owner and chef Alan Wong brings to an enticing array of international small
plates at his latest venture, Amasia, inside the Grand Wailea.
To find the tucked-away restaurant, once the lair of the resort's Japanese owner, des-
cend from the lobby to the koi pond; it's surrounded by rocks from Mt Fuji. And the res-
taurant's name? It's pronounced, appropriately, amaze-ya.
