Polo Beach BEACH

In front of the Fairmont Kea Lani, Polo Beach is seldom crowded. When there's wave
action, boogie boarders and bodysurfers usually find good shorebreaks here. When calm,
the rocks at the northern end of the beach provide good snorkeling. At low tide, the lava
outcropping at the southern end holds tide pools harboring spiny sea urchins and small
fish.
To find it, turn down Kaukahi St after the Fairmont Kea Lani and look for the beach
parking lot on the right.
Palauea Beach BEACH

This untouristed sandy stretch to the south of Polo Beach attracts local surfers and boogie
boarders. Kiawe trees block the view of the beach from the roadside, but you can find it
easily by spotting the line of cars parked along Makena Rd.

To avoid the resorts, drive south to this long and lovely crescent favored by local families
on weekends. It's rarely crowded and the shallow, sandy bottom and calm waters make
for excellent swimming. There's good snorkeling off both the southern and northern lava
points. The parking lot is on Makena Alanui Rd.
