In-Depth Information
Almost everyone rents a car at the airport in Kahului. Otherwise, expect to pay about $29
to $33 for a shuttle service or $30 to $45 for a taxi depending on your location in Kihei.
BICYCLE
Bike lanes run along both the Piʻilani Hwy and S Kihei Rd, but cyclists need to be cau-
tious of inattentive drivers making sudden turns across the lanes.
South Maui Bicycles ( 874-0068; www.southmauibicycles.com ; Island Surf Bldg, 1993 S Kihei
Rd; per day $22-60, per week $99-250; 10am-6pm Mon-Sat) This shop rents top-of-the-line
Trek road bicycles as well as basic around-town bikes.
BUS
The Maui Bus ( www.mauicounty.gov ) serves Kihei with two routes. One route, the Kihei
Islander, connects Kihei with Wailea and Kahului; stops include Kamaʻole Beach Park
III, Piʻilani Village shopping center, and northern Wailea. The other route, the Kihei Vil-
lager, primarily serves the northern half of Kihei, with a half-dozen stops along S Kihei
Rd and a stop in Maʻalaea. From Maʻalaea you can connect with buses bound for La-
haina. Both routes operate hourly from around 5:30am to 8:30pm and cost $2.
CAR
Kihei Rent A Car ( 800-251-5288, 879-7257; www.kiheirentacar.com ; 96 Kio Loop; per day/
week from $35/175) This family-owned company rents cars and jeeps to those aged 21 and
over, and includes free mileage. For lower rental rates, consider one of the older model
cars (which can be well-worn!). Provides Kahului Airport shuttle pickup for rentals over
five days.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Wailea
POP 5938
With its tidy golf courses, protective privacy walls and discreet signage, Wailea looks
like a members-only country club. It is South Maui's most elite haunt, standing in sharp
contrast to Kihei. Don't bother looking for gas stations or fast-food joints; this exclusive
community is all about swank beachfront resorts and low-rise condo villas, with all the
glitzy accessories.
