( 877-212-6284, 298-4403; www.pineappleinnmaui.com ; 3170 Akala Dr; r $159-169, cottages

setting, consider this inviting boutique inn overlooking Wailea, less than a mile from the
beach. Rooms, which have ocean-view lanai and private entrances, are as nice as those at
the exclusive resorts, but at a fraction of the cost. You can watch the sunset from the
pool.
Rooms have kitchenettes, and the two-bedroom cottage comes with a full kitchen.

( 800-532-6284, 879-1261; www.mauisunseeker.com ; 551 S Kihei Rd; r $175, ste $260-295, studio
$185; ) After a no-holds-barred makeover on the Travel Channel's reality show
Hotel Impossible, the Maui Sunseeker emerged sleeker, smarter and, dare we say, a bit
more fun. Catering to gays and lesbians, this breezy, 23-room property sprawls across
five buildings in north Kihei, just across the street from Mai Poina ʻOelaʻu Beach.
Rooms beam with tasteful decor that outshines other places in this price range; all
come with refrigerator, microwave and lanai. The hotel's revamp is ongoing, but watch
for a new reception area and cafe. And the clothing-optional rooftop deck? The buns may
have changed, but the deck's still there. The property is adults only.

( 800-598-9550, 874-8687; www.twomermaids.com ; 2840 Umalu Pl; studio/1br incl breakfast
$140/170; ) I'd like to be, under the sea…yep, the happy-go-lucky Beatles tune
springs to mind inside the Ocean Ohana suite, a bright space swirling with whimsical
maritime imagery. The Poolside Sweet, with its sunset colors and in-room guitar, might
inspire your own inner songwriter. Organic island fruit is provided for breakfast, and
owner/mermaid Juddee bakes delicious banana bread.
Both units have kitchenettes, and the Ocean Ohana suite has air-con. Families are wel-
come. Formerly known as Two Mermaids, the new name reflects the owners status as
tutu - or grandmothers.
