Mai Poina ʻOe Iaʻu Beach Park BEACH

This long sandy beach at the northern end of Kihei is a popular morning launch for out-
rigger canoes and kayaks. After the wind picks up in the afternoon, it's South Maui's
main venue for windsurfing.
Kalama Park PARK

( ) Athletes and fidgety kids will appreciate this expansive park which has tennis and
basketball courts, ball fields and a skate park. Also on-site are a playground, picnic pavil-
ions, restrooms and showers. There is a small beach behind a whale statue, but a runoff
ditch carries waste water here after heavy rains so best swim elsewhere.

annual visitors, stop by the marine sanctuary headquarters. The center overlooks an an-
cient fishpond, and its oceanfront lookout is ideal for sighting the humpback whales that
frequent the bay during winter. There are even free scopes set up for viewing. Displays
about whales and sea turtles provide background, and you'll find informative brochures
about Hawaiian wildlife.
Swing by at 11am on Tuesday and Thursday (and on Saturday December to March)
for free ʻ45-Ton Talks' about whales.
Koʻieʻie Fishpond HISTORICAL SITE

In ancient Hawaii, coastal fishponds were built to provide a ready source of fish
for royal families. The most intact fishpond remaining on Maui is the 3-acre Koʻieʻie
Fishpond, now on the National Register of Historic Places; it borders both Kalepolepo
Beach Park and the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary
headquarters.
