Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum MUSEUM

( 871-8058; www.sugarmuseum.com ; 3957 Hansen Rd, cnr Puʻunene Ave & Hansen Rd; adult/
child 6-12yr $7/2; 9:30am-4:30pm) The former home of the sugar mill's superintendent
now houses this informative museum, which gives the skinny on the Maui sugarcane biz.
Exhibit panels trace how the privileged sons of missionaries wrested control over Maui's
fertile valleys and dug the amazing irrigation system that made large-scale plantations vi-
able. Displays and photographs delve into immigration, work policies and plantation re-
creation. There's also a 10-minute video about sugar cane production. Last admission at
4pm.
Unique artifacts include a working scale model of a cane-crushing plant, an
early-20th-century labor contract from the Japanese Emigration Company committing
laborers to work the canefields 10 hours a day, 26 days a month for a mere $15, and a
rubbing of the tombstone of founder Samuel Alexander, who was killed at Victoria Falls.
Old Puʻunene HISTORICAL SITE
A little slice of a bygone plantation village lies hidden behind the Hawaiian Commercial
& Sugar Company's sugar mill. There, a long-forgotten church lies abandoned in a field
of waving cane, across from the village's old schoolhouse. Still, the place isn't a ghost
town. Out back, just beyond the school, is an old shack that has served as a used book-
store since 1913. Now managed by Maui Friends of the Library ( www.users.maui.net/~m-
fol ; 9am-4pm Tue-Sat) , it's a bit musty and dusty, but the volunteers are super nice, the
selection is wide and books sell for a mere quarter.
To get there turn off Mokulele Hwy (Hwy 311) onto Hansen Rd and take the first right
onto Old Puʻunene Ave, continuing past the old Puʻunene Meat Market building (c 1926)
and the mill. Turn left after 0.6 miles, just past a little bridge. Just before the pavement
ends, turn right and drive behind the school to reach the bookstore.
