Kahekili Highway
They call this narrow, serpentine thread of pavement a highway? That's some optimistic
labeling, for sure. This challenging road, which hugs the rugged northern tip of Maui,
charges around hairpin turns, careens over one-lane bridges and teeters beside treacher-
ous cliffs. It's one of Maui's most adventurous and challenging drives.
Not for the faint of heart, sections slow to just 5mph as the road wraps around blind
curves; a lengthy stretch around the village of Kahakuloa is a mere one lane with cliffs
on one side and a sheer drop on the other - if you hit oncoming traffic here you may be
doing your traveling in reverse! But heck, if you can handle that, this largely overlooked
route offers all sorts of adventures, with horse and hiking trails, mighty blowholes and
delicious banana bread.
Don't be fooled by car rental maps that show the road as a dotted line - it's paved and
open to the public the entire way - although you may want to check with your rental
company to see if driving here is permitted under your agreement. There are no services,
so gas up beforehand. Give yourself a good two hours' driving time, not counting stops.
