MAUI IN...
Three Days
Plunge into Maui with a dip into the sea at Kaʻanapali , followed by a sunset cruise.
On day two, stroll the historic whaling town of Lahaina then treat yourself to the
Old Lahaina Luau. Still got jet lag? Good. Set the alarm early for the drive to
Haleakalā National Park to catch a breathtaking sunrise and hike into the crater.
On the way back, stop in Paʻia for Maui's hippest cafe scene and to check the surf
action at Hoʻokipa Beach Park .
Six Days
For your first three days, follow the three day itinerary. Day four is all about those
gorgeous beaches. Begin by snorkeling with turtles at Maluʻaka Beach MAP
GOOGLE MAP , followed by a picnic at magnificent Big Beach . In the afternoon
pop by ʻIao Valley State Park MAP to ogle central Maui's emerald gem, and then
head to Kanaha Beach for the sailboarding scene. Day five winds past waterfalls
galore on the most legendary drive in Hawaii, the wildly beautiful Road to Hana . It's
going to be a big day - start early, bring a bathing suit and a sense of adventure. On
your last day enjoy Maui's splashiest highlight: a whale-watching cruise ..
MAUI SURF BEACHES & BREAKS
For action sports, head to Maui's beaches. On the north shore, near the town of
Haʻiku, is the infamous big-wave spot known as Peʻahi , or 'Jaws' (see box on Click
here ). Determined pro surfers, such as Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama and Derrick
Doerner, helped put the planet's largest, most perfect wave on the international
map. Jaws' waves are so high that surfers must be towed into them by wave run-
ners.
Not into risking your life? No worries, there are plenty of other waves to ride.
Maui's west side, especially around Lahaina , offers a wider variety of surf. The fun
reef breaks at Lahaina Breakwall and Harbor ( Click here ) cater to both beginner
and intermediate surfers. To the south is Maʻalaea Pipeline MAP ( Click here ) , a
fickle right-hand reef break that is often considered one of the fastest waves in the
world. On the island's northwest corner is majestic Honolua Bay ( Click here ). Its
right point break works best on winter swells and is considered one of the premier
points not just in Hawaii, but around the world.
Gentler shorebreaks good for bodysurfing can be found around Paʻia , Kapalua
and the beaches between Kihei and Makena .
