hostel is doing everything right. The downstairs cafe makes good sandwiches ($8) and a
tasty evening plate dinner ($10), while the upstairs hostel offers clean and tidy rooms and
a relaxing community space. Hostel guests also get a cooked breakfast for $5 and free
wi-fi all around. For Hawaii you cannot beat these prices. Faces Hwy 11.

An oasis
in the desert of Punalu'u, this bakery packs them in from all around. Known for its sand-
wiches and variety of flavored sweetbreads, such as the colorful 'kalakoa', it offers free
samples to aid in decision-making. There's an excellent picnic area out back.
Hana Hou Restaurant

nity fixture, this friendly, homespun diner offers ʻthe best of everything…and plenty of
it.' Portions
are
generous and dishes, though not fancy, rarely disappoint. A new ʻto go'
section features fresh sandwiches and wraps for picnicking, and there's live music on Fri-
day and Saturday. Bring your own bottle. If you're stuck there are two overpriced but
comfy rooms out back ($65/95).

Naʻalehu's other eatery serves mainly fryer and grill fare and has a hardworking bar with
