Pahala
POP 1600
A former sugar town muddling through hard times, Pahala hangs on via small-farm agri-
culture, particularly macadamia nuts and coffee. This quiet town's main streets are lined
with unrestored early-20th-century plantation homes, many now rentals; squint and ima-
gine the past.
Between mile markers 51 and 52 on Hwy 11, take the signed turnoff on Kamani St to
Pikake St, where you'll find Pahala's post office, bank and gas station. Nearby is the
Kaʻu Hospital ( 928-2050; www.kau.hhsc.org ; 1 Kamani St) .
