retreat experience, head north up Hwy 137 (between mile markers 17 and 18) to Kalani,
which occupies a 120-acre compound that hums with activity and energy. It's a fun, com-
munal place to stay, but if you're not down with yoga, meditation, dance and alternative
healing, you'll feel left out.
Massages ($90 to $180) are highly recommended. Nonguests can buy day passes
($20) for use of the facilities and grounds. An outdoor dining lanai (also open to
nonguests) serves healthy buffet-style meals, while the rooms are all simple and breezy,
with bright tropical spreads and plywood floors covered in lauhala mats.. Weekly Ec-
static Sun-Dance ($15) gatherings on Sunday are insanely popular; day care available
($5) and donations ($5) expected.
Right across the road from Kalani is the Point - a wild spot of coast for some contem-
plative solitude on a rough-hewn bench under a lone palm.

LAVA VIEWING NO-NO
Hwy 130 ends at a somewhat ominous set of guard barriers. Many trekkers venture
out from here to try and see the lava flow, but we are warning you:do not attempt
