Hele-On Bus ( www.heleonbus.org ) The main Hilo station is the Moʻoheau terminal (329
Kamehameha Ave) , where all intra-island buses originate. Check the website for current
routes and schedules. All buses are wheelchair accessible.
CAR
The drive from Hilo to Kailua-Kona (via Waimea) is 92 miles and takes 2½ hours. If
you're driving from Hilo to Mauna Kea, the fastest route is Puainako St, which leads into
Saddle Rd. You'll shorten your travel time and reduce traffic on the winding, residential
Kaumana Dr.
Getting Around
BIKE

CAR
Numerous car-rental booths can be found outside the baggage claim area of the airport.
Free parking is generally available in Hilo. Downtown street parking is free for two
hours; finding a spot is easy except during Saturday and Wednesday farmers markets.
If you want to save big on a car rental, and avoid looking like a tourist (a new Mustang
or Jeep will peg you immediately), Aloha Aina Car Rental ( 989-1525; yukoto-
pia@hotmail.com; 1061 Manono St; car hire per week $150-250) is your best option on the is-
land. Enterprising Yuko's diverse collection of secondhand cars are the saving grace for
travelers and locals alike. Rock-bottom rates start at $150 a week, airport pickup/drop-off
included. Drivers must have their own insurance and put down a $300 deposit. Some
4WD vehicles and a priceless Miata convertible available.
Happy Campers Hawaii ( 896-8777; www.happycampershawaii.com ; rental per 24hr $130)
offers VW Westfalia pop-top campers/Vanagons that sleep up to four. At $130 per day,
and in great condition, they're a steal, with built-in kitchenettes, sink with running water,
cookware, bedding and more. A great way to get around the Big Island. Pick up and drop
off in Hilo.
