Hilo has a relatively large homeless population. Definitely avoid Kalakaua Park and
downtown alleys at night. Hilo also has a local culture fascinated with the sport of mixed
martial arts (

), and is home to one of its champions, BJ Penn. Unfortu-
nately some of this has spilled into local bars, so patrons are advised not to be loud or
confrontational.
