$279; ) To reach this unforgettable inn you must drive 4 miles past acres of mac-
adamia orchards to 850ft above sea level. Your reward? It's perched on a spectacular
120ft waterfall, with verdant gorge and swimming hole attached. Eight rooms (in two
buildings) are exquisitely appointed with Asian antiques.
The pagoda guesthouse is a worthy splurge and includes a kitchen, laundry facilities
and 1.5 bathrooms. All power is hydroelectric and off the grid. The unlit 4-mile road can

grandeur of Old Hawaii, you can't beat the Shipman House. This turreted Victorian man-
sion is where Queen Liliʻuokalani played the grand piano, and Jack London slept in the
guest cottage. The main house is perched over a lush ravine, and full of beautiful
museum-quality antiques, including a fantastic collection of woodblock prints and some
fascinating Hawaiiana.
