ʻAkaka Falls State Park

This out-
standing and convenient little park offers an enchanting and newly-renovated concrete
path that loops along the lush cliffs above a river, first passing scenic Kahuna Falls
(100ft), then reaching the truly grand ʻAkaka Falls, which plunge 442ft into a deep green
basin. These are the best of the 'tourist falls' on this coast so don't miss them.
You'll also enjoy a natural botanical garden that goes wildly into bloom during certain
times of year (June to July is heliconia season). To get here turn onto Hwy 220 between
mile markers 13 and 14, and head 4 miles inland. You can avoid the parking fee if you
park outside the lot, but you must still pay the walk-in fee. Cash or credit cards accepted.

fits the bill for those seeking a romantic splurge near resort-free Hilo. The eight ocean-
view rooms are spacious (550 sq ft to 650 sq ft), with high-end furnishings and private
lanai. Four have gas fireplaces and outdoor hot tubs. Guests rave about the full hot break-
fasts. One qualm: rates are steep, but you might luck out during special discounts.
