$400; ) This is a very fine inn. The owners have maximized the value of their property
by combining eco-thinking with fine art and design (Tiffany lamps, Philippe Starck
chairs), including the appropriate use of color, suitable Asian accents, bright skylights
and gleaming hardwood floors.
Nevertheless, the building never surmounts a suburban feel. Gourmet dinners (per per-
son $58 to $68) are served with 48 hours' notice. Rates include breakfast.

) The local choice for trendy, fun and creative breakfasts, like the taro pancakes. At
lunchtime try the spicy tuna melt.
Café il Mondo ITALIAN $$$

11am-8pm Mon-Sat) The best restaurant in Honaka'a, this intimate local gathering place
specializes in pizzas, pastas and, best of all, enormous calzones packed to the bursting
point. If you want to meet the interesting locals, sit at the long central table: it won't take
long. Bring your own wine and don't hesitate to share it.
Tex Drive-In DRIVE-IN $

6:30am-8pm) A malasada is just a donut, but Tex is famous for serving them hot and
fresh. They come plain (96¢) or filled ($1.31). Tex also serves an above average plate
lunch, with crisp green salads; burgers on sweetbread buns are good, too.
Jolene's Kau Kau Korner LOCAL $

10:30am-3:30pm daily, to 8pm Mon & Wed) Awash in local color, this simple 20-year veteran,
which serves a bit of everything in generous portions, is like dining at grandma's house -
and she makes a great burger.
