WM Keck Observatory Office VISITOR CENTER
MAP GOOGLE MAP
( 885-7887; www.keckobservatory.org ; 65-1120 Mamalahoa Hwy; 10am-2pm Tue-Fri) The
lobby of this working office is open to the public, offering models of the twin 10m Keck
telescopes, fascinating photos, and informative volunteers. The hexagonal lawn symbol-
izes the mirror of each telescope. It's definitely worth visiting unless you are visiting the
telescopes themselves. Check the website for occasional lectures.
Paniolo Heritage Center MUSEUM
( 854-1541; www.paniolopreservation.org ; Pukalani Rd; 9am-4pm Wed) In 2011 the
Paniolo Preservation Society took over management of Pukalani Stables, once the center
for Parker Ranch horse breeding operations, and have been creating a museum ever
since. It is still in its early stages, but they have finished one large photo exhibit and a
saddle-making operation.
The great reward is the personal touch: anyone here is happy to bend your ear about
the history of the paniolos . Hours may be extending soon.

Church Row CHURCHES
Home to Buddhists, Mormons, Baptists and other Christians, Church Row is a living
synopsis of the religious life of the Big Island, past and present. There are several note-
worthy, if humble, structures along this curved street, including the much-photographed,
all-Hawaiian Ke Ola Mau Loa Church MAP GOOGLE MAP built in 1931 (service
11am Sunday). Look for the green steeple.
Just next door is the Imiola Congregational Church MAP GOOGLE MAP
( www.imiolachurch.com ;
services 9:30am)
, built entirely of koa in 1857, which has
a beautifully varnished interior.
