The town has some wonderfully wacky weather. It is split into the ʻdry side' and the
ʻwet side,' the boundary being roughly the center of town. So while Kawaihae Rd is a
desert, drive past the malls along Mamalahoa Hwy and you find yourself in green fields.
Days are warm, while nights are cool up here at 2670ft, necessitating jeans and sweaters.
And it can go from sun to rain in the swish of a horse's tail, so make sure that convertible
top is up overnight.
For visitors, Waimea makes a good base to explore Kohala, Mauna Kea and the Ha-
makua Coast, since all are easily accessible; many people like retreating to the cool even-
ings here after a hot day on the beach. Just be aware that Waimea and Kamuela are the
same place on the map. Kamuela is mainly a zip code used to differentiate this Waimea
from those on Oʻahu and Kauaʻi. But having two different names does put one last spin
on this little gem of a town.
