Windswept pastureland. Grazing cattle. Cloud-dappled skies. North Kohala makes some
folks yearn to be a paniolo (cowboy), at least for a day. If that's you, there are two inter-
esting options on Kohala Mountain Rd (and one in Waimea). Be aware that in Hawaii, all
liability for horseback riding rests with the rider.
Paniolo Adventures HORSEBACK RIDING
( 889-5354; www.panioloadventures.com ; Kohala Mountain Rd; rides $69-175) 'Get off the
beaten path with the original all-terrain vehicle.' And you do. Paniolo Adventures offers
five different horseback rides ranging from one to four hours, enough for anyone to find
their comfort level, whether it's walking or cantering. Of particular note is the Sunset
Ride, allowing you to finally - ahem - ride off into the sunset.
The terrain is the beautiful 1000-acre Ponoholo Ranch, a working cattle ranch. Horses
are selected for the rider's experience. All necessary equipment is provided. This is the
best choice on the island for an experienced rider.
Naʻalapa Stables HORSEBACK RIDING
( 889-0022; www.naalapastables.com ; Kahua Ranch Rd; rides $65-85) Naʻalapa Stables or-
ganizes rides across the pastures of the 8500-acre Kahua Ranch, affording fine views of
the coast from its 3200ft elevation. A 2½-hour ride (9-11:30am) is available, but the 1½-
hour ride (1:30-3:00pm) will satisfy most parties. There is some cantering but it's mostly
a nose-to-tail ride, set at the level of the most inexperienced rider.
Turn off Route 250 between mile marker 11 and 12; it's the first building on the right.
