Little more than some scattered, friendly businesses hidden amid thick coffee-and-
macadamia-nut groves, Honaunau is fun to explore without a guidebook. The nearby
'Place of Refuge' remains the star attraction, but meander down Painted Church Rd,
stopping at fruit stands and coffee shacks with sea views for another type of retreat.

From the outside, the Painted Church
doesn't look all that painted. Well, there's a coat of white, but that's hardly unusual. But

inside
and it looks like the Gospels crashed into an art supply store. In a good way!
