Coffee Shack CAFE $$$

( 328-9555; www.coffeeshack.com ; 83-5799 Mamalahoa Hwy; meals $9-16; 7:30am-3pm)
Perched precariously next to the highway, the Shack is famous for the insane views of
Kealakekua Bay from its open-air deck. We can say, with no hyperbole, you may never
have a cup of coffee with a better vista (and if you do, you're one lucky traveller). The
food's pretty kick-butt too, especially the loco moco , which is one of the best variations
on the dish we've had on the Big Island.

The Reading Garden BOOKS
MAP
( 323-9540; 82-6125 Mamalahoa Hwy; 9am-6pm Mon-Sat, from 11am Sun) The Reading
Garden is everything a secondhand bookstore should be: teetering stacks of used
volumes spread about in an ordered chaos, wrapping over walls and up staircases and
even extending outdoors.
Within you may be lucky enough to find incredibly friendly proprietor Marc Medler, a
book enthusiast who feels like a Hawaiian version of the twinkly-eyed professor who
first led the kids through the wardrobe into Narnia. His hobby is restoring rare, vintage
books, and if you ask nicely, he may show you some of the amazing volumes he has on
hand.
KEALAKEKUA BAY'S MORATORIUM
As of 2013, Hawaiʻi's Department of Land and Natural Resources has instituted a
moratorium on kayaks, surfboards, boogie boards and most other watercraft in
Kealakekua Bay (some craft are allowed to transit the bay, but they cannot stop
there). Prior to the moratorium, dozens if not hundreds of vessels were plying the
bay every day, disturbing sleeping spinner dolphins and generally crowding this
body of water. The moratorium was also instituted in response to the drowning
death of a New York teenager in 2012.
