In-Depth Information
There's also a Queen's Bath (a brackish natural pool) just north of the beach. To get
there, walk north from the end of the beach about 200m and look mauka (towards the
mountain). You'll see a trail that runs to the mountain by a dozen large rock clumps. The
pool is about 30m north of the largest mound.
To get to Honokohau Beach, turn right into the first harbor parking lot (look for the
small public coastal access sign). Near the end of the road is the signposted trailhead; a
five-minute walk on a well-beaten path leads to the beach. You can also reach Honoko-
hau Beach along the easy Ala Hele Ike Trail starting from Kaloko-Honokohau National
Historical Park.
Activities
Snorkeling & Diving
The area south of Honokohau Harbor all the way to Kailua Bay is a marine-life conser-
vation district (accessible by boat); diving here is better than snorkeling, though nearby
ʻAiʻopio fishtrap is a good snorkel alternative.
Turtle Pinnacle DIVING
MAP
Straight out from Honokohau Harbor, this is a premier dive site for spotting turtles,
which congregate here to let small fish feed off the algae and parasites on their shells.
Kaiwi Point DIVING
Off this point south of Honokohau Harbor, sea turtles, large fish and huge eagle rays
swim around some respectable drop-offs.
Suck 'Em Up DIVING
The swell pulls divers through a couple of lava tubes like an amusement-park ride, near
Kaiwi Point.
Kayaking
Not just for paddling anymore, kayaks now come ready to sail, surf, snorkel and even
fish.
