MAP
( www.keauhoufarmersmarket.com ; 78-6831 Aliʻi Dr, Keauhou Shopping Center; 8am-noon Sat;
) One of the Big Island's best farmers markets is at the Keauhou Shopping Center.
Though small, it focuses almost solely on high-quality organic produce and products
from local small farms. The warm community feeling is enhanced by live Hawaiian mu-
sic and presentations by local chefs. Grab a coffee and come early!
St Peter's Church CHURCH
MAP
The 'Little Blue Church' is one of Hawai'i's most photographed, and a favorite for wed-
dings. The striking sea-green and white building sits almost in Kahalu'u Bay. Built in the
1880s, St Peter's was moved from White (Magic) Sands Beach to this site in 1912. It
now sits on an ancient Hawaiian religious site, Ku'emanu Heiau.
Hawaiian royalty, who surfed Kahaluʻu Bay, prayed for good surf at this temple before
hitting the waves.

mer beach house of King Kalakaua next to a spring-fed pond, once either a fishpond or a
royal bath. To the south are two major heiau. The first, Hapaialiʻi Heiau , was built 600
years ago and in 2007 was completely restored by dry-stack masonry experts into a
15,000-sq-ft platform; the speculation is that the heiau was used as a sun calendar to
mark the solstice and equinox. Next to Hapaiali'i is the even larger Keʻeku Heiau , also
recently restored. Legends say that Ke'eku was a luakini (temple of human sacrifice);
most famously, a Maui chief who tried to invade the Big Island was sacrificed here, and
