celebrated Hawaiian paddler Uncle Jesse as your guide, experience what original Polyne-
sian settlers must have felt with the water rushing under their hull as they approached the
volcanic shores of the Big Island. Prices for outrigger canoe trips are per person for a
minimum of two people. Also rents kayaks, stand up paddleboards and surfboards, as
well as offering lessons.

Snorkeling
Some of the island's best snorkeling is an easy drive from Kailua: to the south check out
Kahaluʻu Beach Park, Two-Step and Kealakekua Bay; to the north try Makalawena and

Boat cruises (aka 'dolphin cruises'), including snorkeling, are plentiful around Kailua.
A four-hour cruise offers snorkeling in otherwise inaccessible places, the chance to spot
whales and dolphins, and knowledgeable guides. When choosing, always opt for morn-
ing departures, when conditions are best.
Ultimately the captain decides the best destination for the day's conditions. The coast
south of Kailua has beautiful lava cliffs and caves, while the northern coast is a flat lava
shelf with great snorkeling aplenty.
Cruise prices usually include snorkeling gear, beverages and snacks. Most offer inter-
