MAP ( 329-3441; adult/child under 12yr $3/1; 8:30am-4:30pm) at the Kona Interna-
tional Airport. This little museum paying tribute to the Big Island native who per-
ished in the 1986Challengerspace-shuttle disaster collects celestial ephemera like
moon rocks and space suits; it makes an interesting way to spend some time be-
fore takeoff.
BICYCLE
As your primary transportation, cycling around the Big Island is easiest with the support
of a tour. Though doable on one's own, it's a challenge, particularly if the weather
doesn't cooperate. However, Kona - the hub for the famous Ironman Triathlon - has top-
notch bike shops that sell and repair high-caliber equipment.
BUS
The island-wide Hele-On Bus ( 961-8744; www.heleonbus.org ) will get you (most) places
on the Big Island, but Sunday and holiday service is limited. Fares are $1 per ride, and a
monthly pass is $300 for unlimited rides. Always check the website for current routes
and schedules. Most buses originate from Moʻoheau terminal in Hilo. You cannot board
