Makua Valley
As you drive north of Makaha, you won't find any more gas stations, restaurants or even
towns. Wide and grassy, backed by a fan of sharply fluted mountains, the scenic Makua
Valley belongs to a military reservation. A seaside road opposite its southern end leads to
a little graveyard shaded by yellow-flowered trees, the only visible remnant of the com-
munity here that was forced to evacuate during WWII when the US military took over
the valley for war games. Live-fire exercises have ceased, but the valley, rich in ancient
Hawaiian archaeological sites, is still fenced off with barbed wire and danger signs warn-
ing of unexploded ordinance.
Beaches & Sights
Makua Beach BEACH
In ancient Hawaiʻi, this beach was a canoe landing site for interisland travelers. During
the late 1960s, it became a backdrop for the movie Hawaii, starring Julie Andrews and
Max von Sydow. These days there's little here beyond a nice stretch of sand opposite
Makua Military Reservation. There are no lifeguards or other facilities.
Locals crawl out from their nine-to-five lives on weekends to soak up the sun at this
beach. Powerful shorebreaks are popular with expert bodyboarders, and when high surf
rolls in during winter, the sand practically disappears entirely. In summer, give the wild
spinner dolphins plenty of room to rest - do not approach or try to swim with them.
Homeless locals sometimes camp here. Though serious crimes are rarely reported, be
mindful of car break-ins and petty theft.
