Relatively free of tourists even today, this is where big-wave surfing got its start in the
1950s. Makaha means 'ferocious,' and long ago the valley was notorious for bandits who
waited along the cliffs to ambush passing travelers, but the word could just as easily de-
scribe the stark, rugged landscape.

Makaha Beach Park BEACH
(84-369 Farrington Hwy) Makaha Beach hosted Hawaii's first international surfing competi-
tion in 1954, and the long point break here inspired the first generation of big-wave
surfers. Winter months bring huge swells that preclude swimming much of the time, but
the invitingly soft stretch of golden sand is a permanent feature year-round. The beach
has restrooms, outdoor showers and lifeguards.
Except for weekends and on big-surf days, you're likely to have the place virtually to
yourself. In summer when waters are calm, go snorkeling with sea turtles or take a dive-
boat trip to offshore Makaha Caverns with Ocean Concepts ( Click here ) .

Ancient Hawaiians believed that when people went into a deep sleep or lost con-
sciousness, their souls would wander. Souls that wandered too far were drawn
