Ko Olina
Don't have a beach? No problem. All it takes is a couple thousand tons of imported sand.
When Kapolei's luxury resort was still on the drawing board, it lacked one key feature -
a beach. In exchange for public beach access, investors were allowed to carve out four
kidney-shaped lagoons from the coastline and line them with soft white sand. Recently,
Disney's Aulani resort has made quite a splash here.
For snorkel trips and whale-watching and dolphin-spotting tours, book directly with
Hawaii Nautical in Waiʻanae, which offers free shuttle service to/from Ko Olina resorts.
Beaches
Ko Olina Lagoons BEACH
(off Aliʻinui Dr, Kapolei; ) Ko Olina's artificial beaches have calm waters that are
perfect for kids, although the current picks up near the opening to the ocean. A wide,
paved recreational path connects all four lagoons, inviting a lazy sunset stroll. Extremely
limited, but free public beach-access parking can be found by each lagoon, off Aliʻinui
Dr inside the resort area.
To peer at rainbow-colored tropical fish, rent snorkel sets and beach gear at the biggest
lagoon furthest north. Fewer crowds visit the southernmost lagoons, with free parking of-
ten found just before the road's-end marina.
