In-Depth Information
Kolekole Pass, on military property above Schofield Barracks, can be visited as
long as the base isn't on military alert. Bring photo ID and your rental-car contract.
Access is granted by security guards at Lyman Gate off Kunia Rd (Hwy 750). Follow
Lyman Rd for over 5 miles, partially alongside an infantry battle course, to reach
the pass trailhead. Park on the left side of the road before reaching the security
gate, which prohibits anyone without military ID from driving over to the Waiʻanae
Coast.
From the unmarked dirt parking pull-off, look for a short, steep hiking path with
wooden steps that climb toward a viewpoint. On the way up you'll pass a large,
ribbed stone allegedly used in ancient times for ritual sacrifices of fallen warriors.
In Hawaiian mythology, the stone is also believed to be the embodiment of a wo-
man named Kolekole, who took this form to become the perpetual guardian of the
pass. Local lore says that if you touch the stone, bad luck may follow.

Wahiawa

Wahiawa itself isn't the sort of place that most travelers seek out, unless you're looking
for a military buzz cut, a tattoo or a pawn shop. Yet the land around town was considered
sacred by ancient Hawaiians, who built temples, gave birth to royal chiefs and clashed in
fierce battles here.

Dole Plantation THEME PARK
( 621-8408; www.dole-plantation.com ; 64-1550 Kamehameha Hwy; visitor center admission free,
maze adult/child 4-12yr $6/4, train ride $8.50/6.50, walking tour $5/4.25; 9:30am-5pm; )
Less than 3 miles north of town, this busy tourist complex has an outdoor pineapple
maze and miniature train ride that are fun for kids. Inside the gift shop is a sickly sweet
overdose of everything anana (pineapple) - the final touch being pineapples for sale for
higher prices than in local grocery stores.
After you've devoured a cone of frozen pineapple whip from the cafeteria-style Plant-
ation Grille , you can get hopelessly lost in the 'world's largest' maze , as verified by
Guinness World Records , with over 1.5 miles of pathways twisting through more than
14,000 plants.
