NORTH SHORE & HALEʻIWA
You don't have to be a surfer, or even know much about surfing, to have heard of the
North Shore. Iconic breaks such as Pipeline, Sunset and Waimea are world-famous. In
winter the big swells come in and the wave heights reach gigantic proportions. The ocean
rears its head in profound beauty or utter terror - depending on your point of view. In
summer the gigantic waves peter out and international surf tribes migrate to the next big
break - in their wake all that is left is calm water, perfect for snorkeling, diving and
swimming, at those same stunning beaches.
Before the surfing revolution of the 1950s, the North Shore was little more than a col-
lection of fishing villages, sugarcane plantations and dilapidated houses. The rebirth of
board riding brought surfers, big-name pro surf competitions and eventually those eager
to cash in on the trend. The North Shore is far from a sellout though - there's a strong
current within the community to 'Keep the North Shore Country,' where development is
treated skeptically and sustainability is the coolest concept in town.

Turtle Bay
Idyllic coves and lava beds define O'ahu's northern tip, where the Windward Coast and
the North Shore meet. Turtle Bay Resort dominates this landscape with a view-perfect
hotel, golf course, condo village and public-access beaches. Only time will tell if the re-
sort's ambitious expansion plans will come to pass after a court-ordered environmental
