Kaʻiwa Ridge (Lanikai Pillboxes) Trail HIKING
MAP
( http://hawaiitrails.ehawaii.gov ; off Kaelepulu Dr) Identified by the WWII 'pillboxes' (concrete
bunkers) that it passes, this barren two-mile round-trip trail is steep and always slippery -
either with wet mud or dry, loose dirt. Make it to the top for head-spinning views of the
Mokulua Islands off Kailua Bay and the lofty Koʻolau Range. The trailhead is hidden in
the residential neighborhood of Lanikai.
Coming from Kailua Beach, turn right off Aʻalapapa Dr onto Kaʻelepulu Dr and park
uphill just beyond the country club. On the makai (ocean) side of the street, look for a
brown-and-yellow Na Ala Hele sign marking a dirt path beside a chain-link fence.
