Kailua
POP 38,635
Suburban Kailua is the Windward Coast's largest town, a fairly easy title to win. A long
graceful bay protected by a coral reef is Kailua's claim to fame, and many travelers re-
turning to Oʻahu leapfrog over touristy Waikiki to hang out here in laid-back style.
Kailua's sunny weather and wave conditions are just about perfect for swimming,
kayaking, windsurfing and kiteboarding. Beach cottages, mostly cooled by tradewinds
and not air-conditioning, crowd into neighborly lanes. Further along the shore, the ex-
clusive enclave of Lanikai is where you'll find million-dollar views - and mansions eas-
ily valued at twice that much.
In ancient times Kailua (meaning 'two seas') was a place of legends and home to
Hawaiian chiefs, including Kamehameha the Great (briefly) after he conquered Oʻahu.
Once rich in stream-fed agricultural land, fishing grounds and protected canoe landings,
Kailua was home to at least three temples, one of which you can still visit.
