TOP OF CHAPTER
Pali Highway
Slicing through the emerald Koʻolau Range, the Pali Hwy (Hwy 61) soars and winds
between Honolulu and Kailua. If it has been raining heavily, seemingly every fold and
crevice in the jagged pali will have a fairyland waterfall streaming down into the valley.
An ancient Hawaiian footpath once wound its way perilously over these cliffs; in 1845,
the path was widened into a horse trail and later into a cobblestone carriage road. The
modern highway wasn't completed until 1962.
