WINDWARD COAST & KAILUA
On Oʻahu's most verdant coast, pali (cliffs) are shrouded in mist as often as they are
bathed in glorious sunshine. Tropical showers guarantee that everything glistens with a
hundred shades of green, all dazzlingly set against the Windward Coast's turquoise bays
and white-sand beaches. Repeat visitors to Oʻahu often make this side of the island their
adventure base camp, whether they've come to kayak, windsurf, snorkel, dive or just laze
on the sand.
Enticing beaches are found here, especially around Waimanalo and Kailua, but many
shoreline spots further north along the coast are too silted to be much more than a snap-
shot. Once you've left behind the suburbs of Kailua and Kaneʻohe, the rest of the Wind-
ward Coast is surprisingly rural, dotted with family farms and taro patches. The Kame-
hameha Hwy narrows to a modest two-lane road running the length of the entire coast,
doubling as Main St for small towns along the way.
