Makapuʻu Point
Makapuʻu Point and its coastal lighthouse mark Oʻahu's easternmost tip. On the north
side of the point, a scenic roadside lookout gazes down at aqua waters bordered by white
sand and black lava beds. Offshore is Manana Island , an aging volcanic crater once pop-
ulated by feral rabbits that now harbors burrowing wedge-tailed shearwaters. Curiously,
it somewhat resembles the head of a rabbit, ears folded back. In front is smaller, flat Kao-
hikaipu Island , another seabird sanctuary.
TheBus 22 (no service Tuesday) and 23 from Waikiki via Hawaiʻi Kai and TheBus 57
from Kailua and Waimanalo all stop at Makapuʻu Beach and Sea Life Park, but not at the
lighthouse trailhead.
Beaches
Makapuʻu Beach Park BEACH
MAP
(41-095 Kalanianaʻole Hwy) Opposite Sea Life Park, this is one of Oʻahu's top winter body-
boarding and bodysurfing spots, with waves reaching 12ft and higher. Like Sandy Beach,
it's strictly the domain of experts who can handle rough water and dangerous currents. In
summer, when the waves disappear, calm waters may allow swimming. The beach park
has restrooms, outdoor showers, drinking water and lifeguards.

red-roofed lighthouse (no public entry) is closed to private vehicles, but you can park in
the paved lot and hike in. Although not difficult, it's a steady uphill walk and conditions
can be hot and very windy. Spectacular coastal views await - in winter, you might spot
migratory whales offshore.
Avoid the temptation to climb down the rocks to the lighthouse, as that's illegally tres-
passing on federal property. The ligthhouse trail is now part of the Ka Iwi State Scenic
