Lanaʻi Lookout LOOKOUT
MAP
Less than a mile east of Hanauma Bay, a roadside lookout offers a panorama on
clear days of several Hawaiian islands: Lanaʻi to the right, Maui in the middle and Mo-
lokaʻi to the left. About 0.5 miles further east, at the highest point on a sea cliff known as
Bamboo Ridge, look for a little fishing shrine .
The temple-like mound of rocks surrounds a statue of Jizō, a Japanese Buddhist deity
and guardian of fishers. The statue is often decked in flower lei and surrounded by sake
cups. There's a little roadside pull-off in front of the shrine.
Halona Blowhole LOOKOUT
MAP
Just follow all of the tour buses to find this famous blowhole. Here ocean waves
surge through a submerged tunnel in the rock and spout up through a hole in the ledge.
Ignore the temptation to disregard the warning signs and walk down toward the blowhole,
as several people have been fatally swept off the ledge by rogue waves.
The action depends on water conditions - sometimes the blowhole is barely discernible,
while at other times it's a showstopper. Before it goes off, you'll hear a gushing sound of
air being forced out by the rushing tidal waters.
Koko Crater Botanical Garden GARDENS
MAP
( http://www1.honolulu.gov/parks/hbg/kcbg.htm ; end of Kokonani St; sunrise-sunset, closed Dec
25 & Jan 1) According to Hawaiian legend, Koko Crater is the imprint left by the
magical flying vagina (yes, really) of Kapo, sent from the Big Island to lure the pig-god
Kamapuaʻa away from her sister Pele, goddess of fire and volcanoes. Today inside this
volcanic tuff cone is a quiet botanical garden planted with aloes, cacti and other exotic and
native dryland species.
You'll probably have the interconnecting loop trails to yourself. To get here, turn inland
off the Kalanianaʻole Hwy (Hwy 72) onto Kealahou St, opposite Sandy Beach. After
around 0.5 miles, turn left onto Kokonani St, then continue on a rough, unpaved road past
the equestrian center. From Waikiki, TheBus 23 stops once or twice hourly near the corner
of Kealahou St and Kalohelani St, just over 0.3 miles from the garden entrance.
