aging apartment complex attracts an international party crowd with plenty of budget-
friendly amenities, from a 24-hour internet cafe to surfboard and moped rentals. Al-
though security and cleanliness can be lax, each dormitory (co-ed or women-only) has a
full kitchen and telephone. Limited self-parking ($7).
Royal Grove

plenty of aloha characterize this candy-colored pink low-rise courtyard motel, a favorite
of 'snowbird' retirees who return each winter. At this home-away-from-home with a pet
bird and a piano in the lobby, all rooms have kitchenettes. Economy rooms in the older
Mauka Wing are non-stop noisy and lack air-con. Ask about weekly rates.

Just a block from the beach, this eco-savvy boutique hotel has attentive concierge
staff who provide chilled drinks upon arrival, morning coffee with pastries and beach
gear to freely borrow. Design-savvy accommodations show off platform beds,
projection-screen TVs, Japanese-style robes and soothing dark-wood furnishings. It's ro-
mantic enough for honeymooners, and also gay-friendly. No swimming pool.

At the distant Diamond Head edge of Waikiki, adjacent to Sans Souci Beach, Aqua's
Balinese-inspired boutique hotel has hip, cutting-edge design. If you don't mind being
far away from the crowds, it's a calming sanctuary offering free yoga classes, beach gear
to borrow and morning coffee and evening wine in the lobby lounge, with its flickering
candles. No pool, sorry.
