) At Fort DeRussy, this special-interest museum show-
cases an almost mind-numbing array of military paraphernalia as it relates to Hawaii's
history, starting with shark-tooth clubs used by Kamehameha the Great. Concentrating
on the US military presence in Hawaii, extensive exhibits include displays on the 442nd,
the Japanese American regiment that became the most decorated US Army unit in
WWII, and a rooftop Cobra helicopter.
Validated museum parking at Fort DeRussy costs $2 for the first hour, plus $1.25 each
additional hour.

) Arguably in need of renovations and more spacious enclosures, this
small-scale zoo on the north side of Kapiʻolani Park features some 300 species spread
across over 40 acres of tropical greenery. In the aviary near the entrance you'll spot some
rare native birds, including the
ʻio
(Hawaiian hawk),
nene
(Hawaiian goose) and Laysan
duck.
Check the online calendar for family-friendly twilight tours, dinner safaris and
overnight campouts (make reservations). The zoo parking lot costs $1 per hour, but
there's often free parking on Monsarrat Ave.
