As the beachfront has become more developed, private landowners have constructed
seawalls and offshore barriers (called groins) to protect their properties. In doing so,
they've blocked the natural forces of sand accretion, which has made erosion a serious
problem. Some of Waikiki's legendary white sands have been recently reclaimed through
an offshore pumping project.
On Oʻahu, smoking has now been banned at some public beaches and parks, including
Waikiki's Kahanamoku, Kuhio and Kapʻiolani Beaches.
The following beaches are listed geographically from northwest to southeast.
