Orientation
Honolulu's compact downtown set the stage for the 19th-century fall of the Hawaiian
monarchy, all just a lei's throw from the harborfront where whaling ships once docked.
Nearby, the narrow streets of Chinatown are packed with open-air markets, antiques
shops, art galleries and bars. Southeast of downtown heading toward Waikiki, Ala Moana
is Honolulu's beach. The University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa campus is further inland, as are
the upper Manoa Valley and Makiki Heights neighborhoods, which are gateways to
Honolulu's green belt of forest-reserve lands.
