HONOLULU FOR CHILDREN
For endless sand and a children's playground, take yourkeiki(child) or teen to Ala
Moana Beach Park ( Click here ) , where local families hang out. For more of
Honolulu's great outdoors, head up to Manoa Valley's Lyon Arboretum ( Click here ) ,
then hike to Manoa Falls ( Click here ) . Indoors, the Bishop Museum ( Click here ) is
entertaining for kids of all ages, or drop by the interactive family art center in the
basement of the Honolulu Museum of Art ( Click here ).

rainy day when you can't go to the beach, consider dropping by this hands-on mu-
seum for families. Opposite Kakaʻako Waterfront Park, the building was once the
city's garbage incinerator, as evidenced by the surviving smokestack. Interactive
science and cultural exhibits are geared toward elementary school-aged children,
preschoolers and toddlers.
The Fantastic You! exhibit explores the human body, allowing kids to walk
through a mock human stomach. In the Your Town section, kids can drive a play
fire engine or conduct a TV interview. Hawaiian Rainbows and Your Rainbow World
introduce Hawaii's multicultural heritage, while Rainforest Adventures highlights
Hawaii's natural environment and conservation.
From Waikiki, take TheBus 19, 20 or 42, then walk around 0.3 miles makai (sea-
ward) from the nearest bus stop on Ala Moana Blvd at Kolua St. Limited free park-
ing.

gram fees from $10; ) Inside the woodsy Makiki Forest Recreation Area, this small
nonprofit community center conducts family oriented environmental education
programs, day camps and guided weekend hikes for ages six and up. Reservations
are usually required; check the online calendar or call ahead for details.
